Ambleside Fire Station

Ambleside Fire Station is in the heart of the Lake District National Park, only 100 metres from the famous Bridge House over Stock Beck.   There are 13 firefighters on the team at Ambleside, who have full time occupations ranging from a coalman, a hotelier, a butcher to a paramedic.   As Ambleside is an internationally renowned holiday destination the main risk is the significant number of hotels and boarding houses within the area which increases the resident population by up to 20,000 at peak times in the summer.   In addition, there is a large university complex in Ambleside that educates and employs 400 people.

The current fire station has been on its existing site since 1962 and prior to that the station was located in what is now a chinese restaurant on the other end of the village.

The station has two fire engines, a compact pump ladder rescue vehicle and a Land Rover pump, which is necessary to negotiate the narrow roads and more remote areas of Ambleside, Grasmere and beyond.

The Community Safety Team on the station have carried out many home safety checks and fitted many smoke detectors in premises and given a wide range of talks to local Scouts, Brownies, and Guide Groups as well as providing Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 Fire Safety education to pupils in the local junior schools.

Ambleside has consistently raised large amounts of money for the Fire Service National Benevolent Fund and other local charities over many years.   An open day is held every year which always proves extremely popular, not only with local residents of Ambleside, but also the many tourists who are in the area during the August holiday time.
