Fire crews from Maryport, Workington and Cockermouth were assisted by the Turntable Ladder from Carlisle in tackling a fire at Gavel Street Maryport on Wednesday 24 May. Fire broke out in the first floor living room of number two quickly spreading to the roof due to high winds gusting in through the open front door.
On arrival Crew Manager Iredale was faced with a rapidly spreading fire which had already crossed the separating wall into number four, and immediately made up to four pumps. Within a very short time Group Manager McMinn arrived just ahead of the Regular pump from Workington and swiftly despatched the crew lead by Crew Manager Smith to make an attempt to break through into the roof space of number four.
This was achieved in the nick of time thus preventing the fire spreading to number six. The Cockermouth crew tackled the fire from inside number two with Workington retained working from the rear of the properties.
The building was split into three sectors led by Watch Manager Iredale, Crew manager's Craighill and Smith.
The incident was brought to a successful conclusion with the assistance of the Turntable Ladder from Carlisle. This was used to tackle hot spots and make the roof safe as gusting winds prevented the use of ladders on the front face of the building.
