Egremont Fire Station

Egremont is situated in the Copeland District of Cumbria with a population of approximately 7,800 people.

Egremont has had a fire brigade presence since the early 1860's.   The first 'fire engine' was a horse-drawn machine called a Paxton, made by Merryweather and Sons and six firefighters were required on each side of the levers to work the pump.   This engine was bought by the townspeople of Egremont after a spate of fires in 1860.   Businessmen of the town got together and formed a committee and soon over £300 was collected from the town. An engine was bought and commissioned on the 23 February 1861 at a cost of almost £200.   The engine was then housed in the Lamb Lane area.

The station now has one fire engine and12 retained firefighters.

Within the station area is the main A595 trunk road, the BNG Sellafield nuclear plant, five junior schools and one secondary school.   There are also two elderly person homes within the town itself.

The townspeople of Egremont are very supportive of the station and many donations are made through collections and sponsorships from the local people for the Fire Services National Benevolent Fund.   The fire-fighters attend many of the local school fairs as well as the Egremont Crab Fair, famous for the venue of the world championship gurning competition held annually in the town.

Community Safety activity is very prominent in the stations role within the area with many premises being fitted with domestic smoke detectors and having Home Safety Checks undertaken by the Community Safety Team from Egremont.

Further advice on community safety activities may be obtained from the Watch Manager, Eric Spedding on 01946 820281
