Frizington is situated in the Copeland District of Cumbria with a population of approximately 2,500 people.
Historically, in 1884, the local police were responsible for fire fighting in Frizington and the surrounding areas but their equipment and resources were limited. A fire in a draper's shop highlighted the need for a team of firefighters, so a volunteer fire service was formed in 1886. The fire hose cart was kept in a shed at Steel Bank. In 1897, a new manual fire engine was boughtat a cost of £130, this was housed in the then new fire station adjacent to the Council Chambers, unfortunately, this closed in 1920 due to lack of funding.
It was not until the Second World War that the Auxiliary Fire Service was formed. This was based in the original fire station until the early 1970's, when the current fire station was built adjacent to the Anchor Pub. The station now has one fire engine and 12 retained firefighters.
Community Safety activity is very prominent in the stations role within the area with many premises being fitted with domestic smoke detectors and having Home Safety Checks undertaken by the Community Safety Team from Frizington. Further information and advice may be obtained from the Watch Manager, Les Finley on 01946 810229.
