Arnside Fire Station

Arnside is a large village with a population of around 3000, situated on the Kent estuary in the south-west of the county.   The old fire station, which was originally sited on the corner of Silverdale Road, housed a trailer pump but the towing vehicle had to be garaged at Station Road, Arnside as the station was too small to house them both!   The current fire station was built in 1960 and is now staffed by ten part time firefighters that crew a Volvo Compact fire engine. The vehicle carries a wide range of equipment to deal with a wide variety of incidents that the station attends.

One particular problem for the local station is rescues from the notorious quicksand in and around the Kent estuary area.   Over the years many people have been rescued by the fire and rescue servicel when they have underestimated the danger of walking along the beaches.   Although a relatively quiet area, a significant risk the station has to be prepared for is the Cumbria coat rail line, which, in addition to passenger and freight services, carries nuclear flasks en-route to Sellafield and West Cumbria.

Community Safety activity is very prominent in the stations role within the area with many premises being fitted with domestic smoke detectors and having Home Safety Checks undertaken by the Community Safety Team from Arnside.

The Station has consistently raised funds for the Fire Service National Benevolent Fund through regular coffee mornings which are always well supported by the local community.
