Broughton Fire Station

The village of Broughton-in-Furness is situated in a conservation area within the Lake District National Park in south west Cumbria. The population of the village and surrounding rural area is approximately 2,500 people. The population increases significantly during the holiday season.

The station is staffed by 10 firefighters employed on the retained duty system and has one fire appliance.

The original fire station was opened just after the end of the Second World War in the grounds of Broughton Tower Estate. The current station was opened in 1963.

The station provides fire cover to a remote rural area of approximately 11,000 hectares, and is bounded by high fells to the north, east and west and the Duddon Estuary to the south.

The risks are mainly residential, however there are a number of hotels, guest houses and other types of holiday accommodation throughout the area. Industries include agriculture, forestry and slate quarrying. Firefighters attend a range of different types of incidents including barn fires, fell and forest fires.   With the A595 and A5092 trunk roads running through the station area and the large number of minor and single track roads, the station attends a number of road traffic collisions each year.

Like all other fire stations firefighters are involved in a wide range of community safety activities such as carrying out home safety visits. They also take an active part in community life in the village and are involved in various fundraising events.
