Staveley Fire Station

The village of Staveley is situated at the bottom of the Kentmere Valley between the towns of Kendal and Windermere.   There are ten retained firefighters on the team at Staveley with jobs ranging from butchers to photographic technicians.   The village is a very close knit community with the main employer being the Kentmere Photographic operation situated along the Kentmere Valley, which employs over 100 people.

Staveley had a fire station as early as 1865 when a group of local mill owners provided funds to build a station and pay for a horse drawn hand pump, crewed by 30 volunteer firemen, who at the time attended four fires a year.   They were expected to train twelve times every year and eventually the station was moved to its current location which is one hundred yards away from where the founding mill owners sited the horse drawn pump.

Today, a modern Volvo fire engine responds to 60 calls a year with the station "backing up" Kendal and Windermere.   The station has for a long time been very active in Community Safety work with the Community Safety Team on the station undertaking Home Safety Checks and fitting smoke detectors in several hundred houses over the past few ears.   The station also has developed a good relationship with the local school with talks given by the Fire Fighters to Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 pupils.

In 1975, Jack Johnson who was the Sub-Officer at that time, received the BEM for his service to the Fire Brigade.   He completed 41 years service at Staveley, 24 of which as Officer in Charge, and the medal is now proudly displayed on the station.
