Appleby, the old county town of Westmorland, is situated in East Cumbria in a rural location. The fire station covers approximately a seven mile radius which includes a large farming community and is also divided by the notorious A66 trunk road.
The original station was situated on The Sands, next to the River Eden which flows through the town centre, this has now been converted into a dwelling. A new fire station was built in the late fifties with then modern facilities and houses a Fire engine and a Land Rover.
Being in a very rural location the majority of incidents involve farm fires, the usual domestic incidents, and because of the locality of the A66, road traffic collisions represent a high percentage of our turnouts.
Notable incidents over the years include two RAF Tornadoes colliding near the small village of Milburn with the sad loss of all four aircrew, also a Road Traffic Collision at Crackenthorpe on the A66 involving a lorry carrying calor gas cylinders which exploded causing one fatality and major traffic confusion.
During the summer the Fire engine attends local fetes and charity events helping to raise money locally and for the Fire Service Benevolent National Fund and also to promote community fire safety.
Each retained (part time staffed) Fire Station in Cumbria has at least one trained Community Firefighter who is involved in the station area fitting free smoke alarms and giving fire safety advice to the public. The following wards are covered: Appleby, Bongate, Long Marton and Warcop.
