Road safety

Biker safety

Motorcyclists and powered two-wheeler users are one of the most at risk groups for being in a road traffic collision.

Despite the user group representing a small percentage of total road users, they experience a disproportionate high rate in road traffic collisions.

If you ride a motorcycle or powered two-wheeler on the road, unfortunately statistics show that you have a higher chance of being involved in a collision or accident, with young or new riders more at risk.

We’re here to offer riders advice and guidance to help you stay safer when riding.

  • Buying and wearing the correct riding gear is important to prevent and reduce injuries if you are involved in an accident or collision
  • Looking after your motorcycle, ensuring it’s fit to ride, can reduce the risk of an accident or collision
  • Safe motorcycle riding involves proactive measures such as rider training courses, improving visibility and awareness of the environment and hazards

Biker Down

We run free countywide Biker Down safety workshops to teach both motorcyclists and non-riders what to do if they are first on the scene of a collision involving a biker.

These three-hour short courses are internationally-recognised and designed by bikers, and their success helped us earn the Public Sector Driver Safety Award at the prestigious UK Fleet Champions Awards 2025.

But these workshops aren't just for bikers – they can be just as useful for someone who's never been on a motorcycle and teach you life-saving skills which could help in an incident or in everyday life.

Don't worry if you missed out this time – we will be running more safety training courses in the future.

We've delivered training in 2025 across fire stations in Carlisle, Penrith, Ulverston and Workington, as well as bespoke sessions designed for Blood Bikes Cumbria, RoSPA, and Wildlife Oasis Bike Nights.
