Commercial kitchens
The kitchen contains a wide variety of potential fire risks which you need to be aware of and mitigate if cooking is happening on your premises.
You should ensure that your ventilation system is regularly cleaned to remove grease and dirt, which could include:
- Extractor fans
- Ducting
- Cooking appliances
This may require you to employ a specialist cleaner to carry out the cleaning, and your insurance policy may also include conditions for the frequency of specialist cleaning.
Ensure you have the correct extinguishing media for your kitchen and that escape routes are always kept clear.
Any naked flames or hot items should not be left unattended and you should also make sure flammable items are kept well clear, such as towels and aprons.
Appliance safety
Keeping appliances in good condition helps reduce the risk of fire. Appliances should be kept clean, well maintained, and in proper working order, including:
- Fridges
- Freezers
- Washing machines
- Tumble dryers
Make sure filters in tumble dryers, washing machines, and dishwashers are cleaned regularly – ideally after each use where possible.
Do not leave washing machines, tumble dryers or dishwashers running overnight or when no one is present, and always switch off when not in use.
Take special care with laundry that has been contaminated with oils, such as cooking oil, motor oil, or cleaning products. These items should be washed at high temperatures using a suitable detergent.
Oil‑contaminated fabrics may ignite in tumble dryers if not handled properly.
