Sweep away fire risk this Chimney Fire Safety Week
Published 7 September 2026
Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service is calling on homeowners to act responsibly and get their chimneys swept by an approved sweep.
The service is supporting Chimney Fire Safety Week (7–13 September) and the Government’s Fire Kills campaign by reminding residents that a properly swept chimney prevents damage and household fires, while also lowering fuel costs and reducing harmful emissions to protect the environment.
Cumbria’s firefighters responded to 57 chimney fires in 2025–26, most of which were in residential properties, but the service is also reminding business owners of the importance of maintaining chimneys and appliances such as stoves.
Scott Cameron, Group Manager for Prevention and Protection at Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service, said:
“Every year our firefighters attend chimney fires which have devastating consequences for both people and properties, but we know many of these fires are preventable.
By speaking to an approved chimney sweep and following their recommendations, you can have confidence that when you light your appliance, you’re not putting your life or your home at risk.”
Sweeping your chimney twice a year and using a quality-assured fuel is the key to prevention.
Not only does this remove soot and tar deposits but also gives sweeps the opportunity to check for any problems with the appliance, chimney or liner – keeping you and your family safe and warm this winter.

Speak to a sweep!
To keep you and your family safe from fire it is important to:
Have your chimney swept regularly
Depending on what fuel you burn, before the colder months set in and you begin to use your fire again. However, should a fire start, working smoke alarms can give you the early warning. A fire plan can also ensure your family escape in a fire.
Fit and test smoke alarms
Have at least one smoke alarm on every floor of your home and test them at least monthly.
Remind your family and friends
Importantly, don’t keep this advice to yourself – pass it on. Is there anyone you know who may need your help in organising a sweep or testing their alarms?
